Day 232 of 366: The Lady of the Lake

A lovely walk into Twickenham and to the river through peaceful York House Gardens. The gardens are nicely tucked away from the busy high street, just by the river Thames. One of their main attractions is a beautiful fountain, The Oceanides carved by an Italian sculptor Oscar Spalmach at the turn of the nineteenth century. This whole part of Twickenham is reminiscent of the days gone by. A Chinese bridge takes you from the Riverside Gardens to a sunken garden with a pond outside York House, a 17th century stately home. The parish church of St. Mary the Virgin at the back of quaint Church Street, is where the great English poet Alexander Pope is buried. And if you feel energetic you can walk along the river all the way to Richmond. A nice way to spend a morning.
