Does Size Matter?

So I did it. I did something I thought I would never do. I bought a little compact camera. Just to have it handy when I can't carry my big one.

I have a part-time job in London and do a fair amount of walking every day. Street life is fascinating and even if you walk the same way every day, you can always find something different, something unique that unfolds just in front of your eyes. I don't remember how many times I have regretted not being able to capture the moment in time. Carrying a big camera every day is not an option. Over the years it took its toll on my back. So I made the leap. After a lot of research and thinking I went for Sony RX100. And it totally changed the way I look at compacts. It is beautiful and it looks the part. It is simple to handle and the quality of the images is outstanding. I must admit that I do miss the flexibility of a large zoom, especially when using it for street photography, but I am sure, with time I will get used to it. It might even make me a better photographer. After all, in the past people didn't have any zooms and the images were outstanding.

So I have a tiny compact. Ultimately, the size does not matter. What matters most is what you see. The camera is just a tool that enables you to capture it. And now I don't have to worry I will miss those special moments again...

  1. Super street candids Vanda! A great illustration of the fact that the best camera is the one you have with you too :) I got the RX100 for my husband a few weeks ago and it’s a super machine – I’m looking forward to having a better play with it! The results it can produce are really superb too – but I am going to suggest that, to a degree, size does matter. I think one of the reasons this little cam is so good is that it does have a larger sensor than many compacts and also it has a decent sized bit of glass on it, not to mention a fair few megapixels ;0) I’m being pedantic and a little mischievous of course but it is incredible they can pack all this into a truly pocketable camera! Look forward to seeing more photos from it/you, Lizzie

    1. Hi Lizzie. Thank you very much. I hope you will get your hands on the camera soon, because it will give you lots of joy. I can’t wait to see your photos.
I know that if I am completely honest, I chose this camera because of the size of its sensor – and in that sense the size did matter to me. I wanted something that would allow me to take opportunistic photos and still be able to produce larger prints. But on the other hand you can take photos like this – and better ones – with any camera. In that sense, as you said, the best camera is the one that you have with you :) There are so many people who think if they had a better camera they would be a better photographer. They just forget that what matters more is the person behind it. The technical aspect is important, but still secondary…
